We are interested in buildings as cultural objects, that reflect the culture of their users. From homes to installations to community buildings, each project develops a distinctive identity in response to the background of our clients and the wider community, the atmosphere of the site and leaps of the imagination. Our work is focussed on the craft of architecture, with a commitment to detail, grounded in the reality of how things are constructed. We use everyday materials in unexpected ways and explore new materials that reduce the environmental impact of what we build. Benedetta Rogers Benedetta co-founded Artefact having previously delivered a number of self-inititated projects under the name Studio RO/ST. Working with cultural and community groups, she has delivered a pavilion for Hackney City Farm, an exhibition on Ridley Road and Airdraft, an inflatable temporary pavilion for the Architecture Foundation in collaboration with Thomas Randall-Page. Benedetta studied at Bartlett School of Architecture and completed her studies at the London Metropolitan University. Prior to founding Artefact, she worked as an architect at Henley Halebrown, Featherstone Young Architects, Adams + Sutherland and Publica. She has delivered residential, cultural and urban regeneration projects such as the award winning Ty Pawb Arts and Culture centre and the refurbishment project of the Mill House. In 2016, she was awarded the RIBA Boyd Auger Travel scholarship for the research project ‘Echoes of Accra’. Daniel MarmotDaniel co-founded Artefact to focus on buildings that reflect the culture of their users. Working collaboratively with clients and communities, his work marries the craft of architecture with a commitment to delivering projects that bring joy to their users while minimising carbon in construction and in use. Daniel studied architecture at University of Cambridge and completed his studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture. Prior to founding Artefact, Daniel worked as an Associate at Henley Halebrown, leading educational projects, residential developments, masterplans and research studies for Local Authorities across London, including both phases of the much lauded Kings Crescent development. He has considerable experience in the UK and overseas, previously working at urban design practice Publica, Alison Brooks Architects and MVRDV in Rotterdam. Daniel has taught design studios at the University of Nottingham and Central St Martins. Crafted from triangular blue blocks and&nbsp;terracotta tiles, with a warm yellow ceiling, the extension references the tones of the existing house and the client’s heritage, inspired by the&nbsp;book Caribbean Style. The scheme translates these requirements into a series of interconnected spaces that flow from the street through to the garden. The new entrance is marked by a canopy, supported on a triangular column that references the detail of a midcentury building in the surrounding neighbourhood. Single leaf walls are constructed from hollow fairfaced blocks, exposed internally, with insulation and render to the outside. Exposed timber beams and OSB sheathing board are expressed and painted in a bold yellow. In the tradition&nbsp;of public facing buildings with a more ornate civic façade, the garden&nbsp;elevation is more expressive than the utilitarian rendered walls to side&nbsp;and rear. Off-the-shelf blue pigmented blocks were skilfully cut on site by&nbsp;the contractor to create deep triangular columns, with inset terracotta&nbsp;tiles that echo the hung arrowhead tiles of the original 1950’s house. This&nbsp;triangular motif recurrs across the project, from the shape of the plot and&nbsp;the canopy column to the patterning of the original mid-century wallpaper. Almost 80% of new homes are constructed in brick with around 2 billion produced per year. However, the process of excavating, milling, shaping, drying and firing the clay to make conventional bricks is very carbon intensive. There is an alternative. Designed for Clerkenwell Design Week 2024, Brick from a Stone is made from stone bricks which have around 25% of the carbon of clay fired bricks. Six stone brick columns in Portland limestone and Darney sandstone support a roof for shelter, constructed from timber and translucent stone templating sheet. The maquette, a collaboration between Artefact and Hutton Stone,&nbsp; is scultped out of a single boulder of Darney Sanstone in Hutton’s workshops by their stonemasons. The sculpture is a celebration of the age old process of transforming stone from the quarry face into building blocks and of the rich textural variation of the natural material. &nbsp;It is a work of handcraft that parallels the industrial process. Below the church lies an expansive and underused undercroft. The Common Rooms transformed this space, catalysing the renewal and rebirth of the church as a building rooted in the community. Partitions were constructed from off-the-shelf timber sections, with polycarbonate celerestory windows, their detail and rhythm echoing the design of the garden room in the church above. Wood wool panels help to absorb sound across the large spaces, and a joyful colour palette help to enliven the undercroft which has limited daylight. A bold blue column with expressed copper piping in the centre of the space creates a moment of curiosity, as it supports the baptism font of the church above. The servery projects from the kitchen into the canteen, celebrating the moment food is served. Bedrock A vision for a new housing community in a disused quarry on the island of Portland in Dorset. When once the character of our towns resulted from locally available resources and skills, today materials for our carbon hungry buildings travel from afar. It has a positive circular vision of extraction and renewal, upcycling Albion Stone’s Admiralty Quarry by carefully balancing the need for new homes with ecological restoration. Sheltered from the infamous Portland wind, ‘downscrapers’ are embedded within the dramatic topography of the rewilded landscape. The stone demonstrator hamlet is constructed with locally sourced stone and seaweed, creating jobs and upskilling residents in the process to rekindle indigenous stonemasonry knowledge. Flexibility is built into the plan to allow homes to expand over time, by pairing kitchens and through soft spots in living spaces. These open onto a shared terrace with dramatic views over the rewilded quarry landscape. The structure is envisaged as a place where people can congregate, share meals, host events and shelter from the rain. Our communities are increasingly fragile and transient with communal space disappearing from our towns and cities.
